In the great movie of that name, two men hide out in corsets and a women’s jazz band. Poor Tony Curtis becomes Marilyn Monroe’s best girlfriend while also pretending to be a rich playboy who just can’t seem to get aroused. Marilyn, instead of finding the rich playboy she wanted, gets love instead. On the other hand, Tony’s sidekick (played by Jack Lemmon) gets propositioned by a genuine oil tycoon. The film ends by the tycoon being told, “But I’m a man!” To which, in the tradition of true love, the tycoon responds, “Nobody’s perfect!”

BE OPEN: If you don’t want to climb the Sears tower or eat pickled pigs’ feet, fine. But he does. Maybe his dead wife ate them while scaling the stairs and he now does it to keep a spiritual connection with her. You don’t have to like it, but you do have to accept it as existing.

BE REALISTIC: Who you are and how you look will be appealing to someone who likes certain features that you have and certain characteristics you display. You will, with patience, find someone, for example, who loves hairy chests, gapped-teeth, small feet, or big bellies. But keep in mind that Britney Spears and Brad Pitt are probably not the someone you have set your standards for. If, that is, you are an unemployed, inch-thick glasses-wearing, lightly endowed nose-picker who insists on taking your mother on your dates with you (yes, I know someone like this), you may want to avoid telling the woman with the Master’s Degree and six writing awards who is thirty pounds overweight that she is just not good enough for you to take out in public. Regardless of how often you date, it’s never easy even if you’ve got a little black book full of numbers or an online dating profile full of responses. Perhaps that is why they seem to be going out with so many people. They just never can get past those first few dates without something going really wrong. Let’s face it, dating is an instincet and not a learned skill. You can find all sorts of dating tips, but one size does not fit all. Choosing who to listen to and where you get your advice is often more important than the advice itself.
