Jokes about lawyers taking advantage of their clients ring sadly true in domestic cases. Lawyers are probably the most dangerous, least useful sandbox relationship you can have. Sure, it’s tempting. The amount of time and personal support (and expense) given by a lawyer can be tremendous. And while the average lawyer would never dream of sleeping with a client undergoing difficult times, there just aren’t that many average lawyers.
On the other hand, I confess to admiring one client who had run up an enormous legal bill. She really screwed her lawyer. After doing very, very well in the settlement, she promised her lawyer/lover that she would go straight to the ethics board and file a complaint if he forced her to pay. So much for that big bill! And, no, his name wasn’t Peter.
